This amazing natural stone reception desk was a project that required both serious design and serious engineering.
The client wanted curves, ridges and the design also required mitre cuts, so the drop down from the top required figuring out how we were going to attach a vertical piece to a horizontal piece with the curve – because you can’t really curve a mitre.
This project required us to create a prototype to make sure the angles and curves would all fit together and look beautiful.
We needed to cut 2” strips of this Matarazzo Dolomite and glue them together. Then they had to be applied so we could see how things would play out in the “real” installation. The trickiest part is that the backs of the pieces have to be cut at an angle and hand shaved in order to make this work. This involves “coffining”, which is when the front of the piece is wider than the back, all in line with making the curve. glue them together while shaping them around the curve. And each curve took about 8 shop hours (lots of hand finishing).
After all of the meticulous shop work that filled several days, we were able to then install in one day so they could be up and running for clients without interruption.
