Can I Put a Hot Pan Directly on my Countertop?

This is one of the most common questions we get. People seem to feel compelled to want to be able to take a hot tray or pan out of the oven and put it directly on their countertops.

We understand. It’s the path of least resistance.

But it’s not our top recommendation.

The important professional caveat: using a trivet is still the safest recommendation for every surface.

Granite and quartzite tolerate heat well, but sudden temperature changes can potentially cause thermal shock.

Porcelain is highly heat-resistant, but fabricated edges can be vulnerable to impact or existing damage.

The cheat sheet:

Quartz – no. The resins and polymers used to manufacture quartz will either melt, crack or discolor

Granite – yes – it’s a super durable natural stone

Marble – yes  – though it’s a softer natural stone and it’s porous, so if it’s a drippy pan of hot lasagna, I’d caution against it.

Quartzite – yes – it’s another very durable natural stone

Porcelain – yes

Still, we highly recommend a trivet or at least a towel or pot holder – something to protect you, the pan and countertops you’ve invested in.
